The Town That Time Forgot

That is the tagline used to describe Galena since the 1980s and probably before.  Galena avoided two seemingly unstoppable forces: the Galena River and Time.

Buildings decay rapidly when left to natural forces, but buildings made of brick and stone take longer to fail.  The cycle of decay and renewal was suspended as Galena's economy languished through the early and mid 20th century.  When efforts for the "urban renewal" of downtown Galena finally arrived at our doorstep, the cries for preservation overrode the lure of profits and our modest little town, frozen in time, became a showplace for 19th century architectural splendor.

This site contains a growing collection of photographs, mostly undated, that show Galena's historical past.  Please enjoy them!

Come one, come all!  Galena is about to embark on the biggest year-long celebration in her 200 year history!  December 27, 1826 is the day villagers voted to rename their home "Galena."  We will begin our year of celebration on December 27, 2025 and conclude with a birthday party on December 27, 2026.

Groups of volunteers from every corner of Galena have been meeting to plan the events.  Find out more on the Galena 2026 website!

Alfred W. Mueller, 1909-2004

This site is dedicated to Alfred W "Alfie" Mueller, a life long resident of Galena, Illinois. Alfie was born September 10, 1909, and lived for 95 years until passing away on October 5, 2004.

Throughout his life, Alfie is said to have collected tens of thousands of photographs, lithographs and tin-types documenting Galena's great history.  "I want my photographs to stay in Galena....  I want people like you to be able to go to my pictures like they go to the library, and not have to pay."

It is our wish that someday Alfie's dream comes true and his collection is on display for all to see.  In the meantime, we have this smaller collection to enjoy and memorialize.  Thank you for visiting!
